British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French aircraft in a coordinated attack targeting an underground arms cache in Syria used by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The location, located using intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in hills just above the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a several access tunnels down to the depot... early reports suggest the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the attack on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established extremist governance over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action demonstrates British leadership, and resolve to work closely with allied nations, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary stated.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of the group following its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank the personnel of the UK armed forces who took part in this strike for their professionalism and their valour," Healey said. "They were among numerous British personnel stationed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove militants who pose a risk to our security, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, protecting the UK at home and powerful internationally."

During December, the US military conducted what it called a "massive strike" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an attack killed two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Iraq and Syria.
