Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has claimed 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming Ashes series.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches kicking off on November 21 in Western Australia.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about the prospects of participating.

"We know that time is getting short and various factors around that, aside from his injury, but additional elements," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he will feature a major part. With luck starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand recently after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss three Australian summers in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the series.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against India as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the opening match as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the starting games anyway. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we opted to take a cautious route."
